With over 14 million residents, Calcutta ranks as the third most populous metropolitan area in India. As a growing city in a developing country, it faces issues such as substantial urban pollution, traffic congestion, poverty, and overpopulation. In south Calcutta, the Model school educates underprivileged children from the Kalighat and Lock Gate districts. Their journeys to school start in the street or along railroad tracks. No matter what daily hardships the families endure, the children are always immaculately dressed for their walk to school. UNESCO, TRANSDEV and SIPA PRESS have pooled their talents in partnership to create a photo exhibition dedicated to the children around the world who face real challenges in making their daily journey to school, sometimes at great personal risk, in the hope that their education will lead to a better life.
